Gears of War: Ultimate Edition / Rare Replay is a Miscellaneous game, developed by Various and published by Microsoft Game Studios, which was released in 2015.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a remastered version of the original Gears of War (2006) game. It contains the full original campaign with small tweaks but a complete visual overhaul. It also has the five chapters of the later PC version. All graphics including the cut-scenes have been redone in 1080p and there are small changes to the controls. The casual difficulty settings of the game has been made more accessible, with three more difficult settings in addition. There are reworked achievements to show the progress, there is 7.1 dolby surround sound and there are comics as unlockables.

The game's multiplayer has been reworked locked at 60 FPS for smoother gameplay. Changes to the multiplayer include eight-way rolling instead of four of the original game and some traversal elements that were introduced in later games. All game modes have support for dedicated servers, a small amount of spectator options and tweaks to map balancing. New game modes are Team Death Match, King of the Hill, and the two-on-two Gnasher Execution mode designed by the community. It is also the first Xbox One game to support multiplayer games over a LAN. The game provides access to the multiplayer beta of Gears of War 4.

This most base release of the game is known as Day One Edition on Xbox Marketplace (where base game itself is treated as part of a bundle) and includes two bonus DLCs not available standalone:

  • Gears of War: Ultimate Edition - Civilian Anya
  • Gears of War: Ultimate Edition - Animated Imulsion

Rare Replay is a compilation of 30 games by developer Rare / Ultimate - Play the Game / Ashby Computers and Graphics to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the studio. The included games are:

None of the included games were previously available for Xbox One. Games released before 1996 have additional features such as the option to add scanlines, modifiers such as unlimited lives and an option to rewind progress. Games are introduced with a theatrical presentation. The Xbox 360 titles cannot be played directly from the game, but need to be installed separately and require a one-time online activation. Online multiplayer is available for the games that had it included originally, as well as most of the DLC. Achievements from previously played Xbox 360 games are carried over.

Also included are the two galleries Rare Revealed and Snapshots. Rare Revealed contains behind-the-scenes content, concept art, unreleased music and video clips about the studio's history, game development and unreleased games. Snapshots contains small segments or mini-games of sixteen games in the collection as small challenges, similar to the NES Remix series. Certain achievements and milestones are rewarded with stamps, used to unlock content in the Rare Revealed gallery. Popular titles such as GoldenEye 007 and Donkey Kong Country are not included due to licensing issues.
